Recognition of prior learning

What is recognition of prior learning (RPL)? Put simply, it means getting credit towards your course if you've already studied similar subjects at university or TAFE, or have relevant work experience.

Getting credit for prior learning means you finish your degree sooner – and it costs less too.

Credit is given in the form of subject points. In most courses, a subject is eight points. So, if your RPL application is successful and you receive 16 points of credit, that's two fewer subjects you need to complete to graduate.

Credit can be given for specific subjects you've completed in another course, for proficiency in a subject, for a number of subject points you have completed, and even for future study you plan to complete.

Not all courses offer credit for prior learning or work experience, so make sure you check your available credit and pathways.

Applying for recognition of prior learning

If you're applying online directly to us, you apply for RPL at the same time.

If you're applying to us through UAC or VTAC, you need to apply for RPL after you accept an offer. You do this through the credit planner.

The key thing to remember is that you will need to supply documentation as evidence of your previous study or work experience – and you might need to get those documents verified.

Check out our guides to providing supporting documentation and how to verify your documents.
