CSU's Master of Viticulture and Oenology provides graduates with the opportunity to obtain advanced knowledge in viticulture and wine science.

  • Why study this course?

    Students learn to develop their research skills through the preparation of a research dissertation in a specialised area of interest which may include: vine health, vine physiology, wine production and wine sensory science.

    The Master of Viticulture and Oenology aims to:

    • promote advanced knowledge in viticulture and wine science
    • promote capacity to identify and solve issues faced by the grape and wine industries
    • promote critical reflection through independent research and analysis
    • encourage scholarship and research within the candidates discipline area.
    Professional recognition

    Students are eligible for student membership to the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology.

    Graduated students are eligible for full membership to the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology.

    Course structure

    Students must complete 96 points at a pass level or better to be eligible for graduation. All students must complete a 40 points core, choose between a 32 and a 16 point dissertation and make up to 96 points using restricted electives.

  • Residential schools

    Students studying by distance education may have to attend residential schools that involve attendance on Wagga Wagga Campus each session for between two and four days' duration.

  • Admission information

    Successful completion of a Bachelors Degree

    Successful completion of a Bachelor degree in Wine Science or Viticulture, or successful completion of a relevant Bachelor degree in Biology or Chemistry or Microbiology with a minimum of three years' experience in the wine industry.

    Students who do not have demonstrable prior knowledge in Biology, Chemistry and Microbiology will be offered a transition pathway composed of four Single Subject Study subjects. Upon passing these subjects, students will be made a full offer to the course. The subjects are CHM104 and PSC103 in Session 1, and CHM107 and MCR101 in Session 2.

    Graduation requirements

    To graduate with the Masters degree, students must successfully complete at pass level or better - 64 subject points, plus a 32 point Dissertation or - 80 subject points, plus a 16 point dissertation (total of 96 points).

  • About the School

    The School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences

    The School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences is the largest and most successful provider of agricultural, horticultural and wine science education supporting rural industries in Australia. Operating out of the Orange and Wagga Wagga campuses, the School comprises of approximately 70 academics, research, technical and administration staff, offering courses and research focus in fields such as agriculture, horticulture, wine making and viticulture. Research is undertaken through key CSU Research Centres, and staff have major involvement in national Cooperative Research Centres – linking universities, government bodies and industry organisations across Australia to focus on national sector-wide issues. The School’s industry linkages ensure courses remain relevant and topical, and that we develop graduates who will make an impact within their profession.

  • Academic expectations

    For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

    Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

    Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

    Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

    Throughout their studies, CSU students have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English Language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to their discipline. This ongoing development will enable students to effectively participate in their course and graduate as competent professionals.
