The Master of Business Leadership is designed for senior managers and executives who lead and manage high-performing, dynamic organisations. The course delivers critical knowledge and skills in leadership, and aims to develop leaders through applied and reflective learning.

  • Why study this course?

    CSU's Master of Business Leadership offers cutting edge thinking in the leadership field and explores leadership as a dynamic activity aimed at delivering exceptional organisational results. The course aims to develop critical engagement with 'leadership' as an ideal, practice and experience, and builds effective leadership capabilities through experiential and critical reflection.

    The Master of Business Leadership provides flexibility for students to tailor their studies to address particular professional needs including adding subjects from other specialised business areas.

    The course is structured to help develop critical thinking, complex problem solving, complex decision making and high level communication skills. Learning activities are designed to enable students to draw on their professional experiences, while assessments challenge students to apply knowledge and skills from the course to solve leadership problems within their own workplaces.

    Flexible study options

    CSU's flexible learning environment allows students to study online from anywhere in the world, with dedicated academic support. Subjects are taught using a range of blended learning techniques designed to facilitate communication and collaboration between students and lecturers in an online environment.

    Students can choose between full-time or part-time study to fit in with work and family commitments. Options are available to undertake one subject per session or up to four subjects per session for those wishing to fast-track completion.

  • Career opportunities

    The Master of Business Leadership is designed to challenge students to explore new ways of thinking about leadership and to critically reflect on effective approaches to leading across different organisational settings and situational/strategic needs. Knowledge and skills developed in the course will enable graduates in managerial / executive positions (and those aspiring to such positions) to assume greater leadership responsibilities and take on contemporary leadership challenges in a broad range of corporate, government, small business and not-for-profit roles.

  • Credit and pathways

    Students may elect to exit from the Master of Business Leadership with a Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership (after completion of four required subjects) or a Graduate Diploma of Business Leadership (after completion of eight required subjects).

    Students who have successfully completed relevant subjects at other universities or educational institutions may request credit for those subjects when applying to CSU. Credit will be granted for subjects that are equivalent in content and standard, at the discretion of the Course Director.

    Master of Business Leadership

    The course comprises the following subjects:

    MGT599 Leadership Theory and Practice (16 points) - double subject studied in one session
    MGT569 The Leadership Challenge
    MGT559 Contemporary Issues in Leadership

    Completion of the above subjects allows students to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership (32 points)

    MGT584 Leadership in Teams
    MGT568 Difference and Leadership
    Elective 1*
    Elective 2*

    Completion of the above subjects allows students to exit with the Graduate Diploma of Business Leadership (64 points)

    MGT579 Power and Leadership
    MGT549 Toxic Leadership
    MGT552 Leadership and Social Impact
    Elective 3*

    Completion of the above subjects allows students to graduate with a Master of Business Leadership (96 points)

    *Electives to be selected from any 500 Level Faculty of Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences subject. The level of a subject is designated by the first digit in the subject code; e.g., MGT599 is a 500 Level subject.

    Enrolment pattern

    Master of Business Leadership (Articulated Set)

    There is no prescribed enrolment pattern because of the flexibility of the course. However, it is recommended that students progressively complete subjects in the Graduate Certificate, then the Graduate Diploma and finally the Masters.

  • Admission information

    For entry to the Master of Business Leadership, applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution (or equivalent) and appropriate work experience.

    Applicants without a tertiary qualification may be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership on the basis of professional attainment and/or work experience. Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, students will be eligible for admission to the Master of Business Leadership and receive credit for applicable subjects.

  • About the School

    School of Management and Marketing

    The School of Management and Marketing is a multi-campus school with staff and students on each of the University’s main campuses: Albury-Wodonga; Bathurst; and Wagga Wagga. The School also has many online students from across Australia as well as internationally located.

    Academic staff within the School teach and research in the discipline areas of Management and Marketing and many have extensive business and practical workplace experience that informs their teaching and research.

    We seek to nurture a culture of excellence in teaching, research and professional practice. With a strong focus on quality work-integrated learning and teaching, the School seeks to produce graduates who are highly knowledgeable, insightful, reflective, ethical and workplace capable. The School offers generalist business courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the Bachelor of Business Studies and the Master of Business Administration (with specialisations). We also offer specialist courses that build core knowledge and skills in particular discipline areas such as Management, Leadership, Organisational Change, Strategy, Human Resource Management and Marketing. Staff in the School are also actively engaged in research and higher degree supervision. Research from our marketing staff has been ranked as internationally significant by Excellence in Research Australia.

  • Academic expectations

    For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

    Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

    Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

    Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

    Throughout their studies, CSU students have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English Language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to their discipline. This ongoing development will enable students to effectively participate in their course and graduate as competent professionals.
