This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed for an exciting and enriching career as a teacher, activity specialist, adventure guide or expedition leader in diverse educational contexts. You will undertake professional studies in education, geography, outdoor recreation, ecotourism, outdoor education, environmental education, environmental science, communication and leadership.

Outstanding location

Within easy reach of Lake Hume, the Murray River and Victoria's snowfields and national parks, CSU's Albury-Wodonga campus is an ideal base for outdoor recreation.

Hands-on learning

You'll complete five days in a community-based placement and 80 days of supervised professional experience in secondary schools and outdoor education centres. This provides opportunities for you to develop and apply your knowledge of teaching and learning and demonstrate the Graduate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Flexible study options

With CSU's flexible and blended learning study options you can complete the course in four years of full-time study, with subjects undertaken in all three sessions. From third year, you can choose to study completely online or remain on campus. Following your second year of study, you have the option to concurrently enrol in CSU's Bachelor of Educational Studies which will give you a second high school teaching area.

The course is integrated with Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation and a comprehensive professional experience program. Literacy and numeracy development and support are embedded into the course to ensure that you will meet new government standards for teachers.

Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation

The Bachelor of Outdoor Education includes a 16-point credit package for completion of a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation through Wodonga TAFE. You will gain skills in leadership, outdoor survival, wilderness first aid, risk management, navigation and nature conservation. Activities may include bushwalking, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, ski touring and ski camping, mountain biking, sea kayaking and white water rafting. 

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) until 31 December 2019 for national accreditation recognised by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

This course includes extensive professional experience teaching in a variety of secondary schools including international, rural, regional and/or urban settings. Students are required to undertake 85 days of placement, commencing in third year.

Over the course of their studies, students will have the opportunity to apply discipline expertise through professional experience subjects. Students are also required to undertake 35 hours of community placement to enhance their understanding of community organisations.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students

From 1 July 2016, all students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) before being able to register with their state-based teacher institute or equivalent body. From January 2017, all students will need to pass the test before undertaking their final professional experience placement. This computer-based test consists of both multiple choice and short answer questions and is designed to assess personal literacy and numeracy capabilities. The purpose of the test is to demonstrate to future employers that early career teachers have high levels of literacy and numeracy. CSU has a range of support options specifically for initial teacher education students preparing for the Test. More information about the test is available at teacheredtest.acer.edu.au

Working with Children Check

All teacher education students in Australia must comply with the working with children legislation requirements of the state / country of where their placement is occurring. Students will be required to provide evidence to the Faculty of Arts and Education’s Professional Experience Unit of a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter prior to undertaking any placement in a school or early childhood service. The checks are intended to identify people who have convictions for such things as violence or sexual offences and who may put clients'/children’s personal safety or health at risk. Traffic violations and other minor offences are not of interest.

Prospective students should be aware that not passing a Working with Children Check will make it difficult for them to complete a teacher education course satisfactorily because of the unavailability of suitable school or preschool professional experience placements.

The Working with Children Check expires every five years. You will be required to ensure it remains current and valid to the end of the final placement in the course. Please note that a WWCC can take an extended period of time, so it is recommended that you commence the process early to prevent timing problems. The Australian Institute of Family Studies provides useful information and links relevant to the Australian states and territories. Information on the current Working with Children Check must be uploaded to the student’s information site on InPlace.


Anaphylaxis Training for all Initial Teacher Education Students

The NSW Education Standards Authority (ESA), previously the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES), now requires that all initial teacher education students have training in anaphylaxis. In order to meet this requirement, ALL students must complete the training module found at http://etraining.allergy.org.au. The online module takes approximately one hour to complete.

On successful completion of the online module, participants will receive a certificate of completion. A copy of this certificate must be attached to your application for your professional experience placement. ESA suggests that students also present a copy of their certificate of completion to principals at the commencement of their professional experience placements. The training must be successfully undertaken every two years and students will need to ensure that their certificate of completion is current.

The NSW Department of Education advises that students who do not successfully complete this training, as verified by the university, will not be able to undertake professional experience activities in NSW public schools.

Child Protection Awareness Training

Students must also complete child protection awareness training. Where this is not possible face to face, an online training course is available. This training needs to be renewed annually. See: Child protection awareness training e-learning module

Residential schools are a great way to practise what you are learning in a hands-on environment, and to meet your lecturers and classmates.

Some online courses include a residential school, where you will attend a CSU campus during certain sessions throughout your course.

Subjects

For each 8 point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, residential schools, or examinations.

If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

To graduate with the Bachelor of Outdoor Education, students must complete 32 subjects (31 core subjects plus one restricted elective), plus Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation from an external provider.  The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation is represented on the student’s transcript as a 16-point credit package REC01C Outdoor Recreation Credit. Including this credit package, the Bachelor of Outdoor Education has a total point value of 264 points.  All subjects have a value of 8 points unless otherwise stated.

This ongoing development will enable you to effectively participate in your course and graduate prepared to enter the workforce.

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 264 points.

Aside from course tuition fees, all students who choose to study on campus incur other fees such as accommodation, Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and other living expenses.

If you choose to study online, some subjects may require you to attend compulsory residential schools in Australia. Residential schools are held on campus in Australia for up to five days during certain sessions.

Online courses for international students do not meet the requirement for an Australian Student Visa, therefore you will need to check that you can obtain an appropriate visa for any residential school session.
