Course highlights

The Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) will prepare you to be a health and physical education teacher in secondary schools. You will also be ready for a career in the health and fitness industry or in sports organisation, management and coaching.

Diverse and engaging subjects

Our course includes studies in education, exercise science, physical education (for example, sports, dance, gymnastics, athletics, aquatics and other recreational activities), personal development, social and community health and human development, as well as the physical and behavioural sciences of human movement.

Be at the front of the classroom

You'll gain extensive experience in the classroom through 80 days of supervised workplace learning in rural, regional and/or metropolitan secondary schools. You'll also complete 35 hours of workplace learning in community educational settings such as outdoor recreation centres, PCYCs, sport and recreation and vacation care centres. There are even opportunities to participate in sport outreach programs in Samoan schools.

Literacy and numeracy development and support are embedded into this course, ensuring you'll meet new government standards for teachers. Our lecturers have extensive in-school teaching experience – including experience in executive roles and curriculum leadership roles and international teaching experience – as well as being acclaimed researchers in their fields. Small class sizes also mean you will have extensive opportunities to liaise directly with your lecturers, leading to a more personalised learning experience.

Following your second year of study, you have the option to concurrently enrol in our Bachelor of Educational Studies, enabling the addition of a second high school teaching area. Further improve your employment outcomes by studying maths, science, English, modern history or another high school subject of your choice.

Flexible study options

The course can be completed in four years of full-time study. Alternatively, if you need your study to be more flexible and part-time because of work or professional sporting commitments, this may be accommodated.

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) until 31 December 2019 for national accreditation recognised by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Graduates from this program will possess a teaching awards that is recognised nationally and internationally.

Modern, well-equipped exercise and sport science laboratories are located on our Bathurst campus. A comprehensive range of study support programs, communal and connected learning spaces, and mobile technology-enabled systems create a friendly, accessible student community.

During the first year of this course, you will participate in a 35-hour community-based placement, such as in a sport and recreation centre, to achieve an understanding of how educational experiences are linked to wider social issues and contexts.

In the final two years of the course, there are three professional placements of between 20 and 30 days in length. You will progress from observation to supervised teaching in a variety of educational settings. The key focus will be progression toward attaining the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the graduate level. There is also the opportunity for you to undertake an international placement.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students

From 1 July 2016, all students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) before being able to register with their state-based teacher institute or equivalent body. From January 2017, all students will need to pass the test before undertaking their final professional experience placement. This computer-based test consists of both multiple choice and short answer questions and is designed to assess personal literacy and numeracy capabilities. The purpose of the test is to demonstrate to future employers that early career teachers have high levels of literacy and numeracy. CSU has a range of support options specifically for initial teacher education students preparing for the Test. More information about the test is available at teacheredtest.acer.edu.au

Anaphylaxis Training for all Initial Teacher Education Students

The NSW Education Standards Authority (ESA), previously the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES), now requires that all initial teacher education students have training in anaphylaxis. In order to meet this requirement, ALL students must complete the training module found at http://etraining.allergy.org.au. The online module takes approximately one hour to complete.

On successful completion of the online module, participants will receive a certificate of completion. A copy of this certificate must be attached to your application for your professional experience placement. ESA suggests that students also present a copy of their certificate of completion to principals at the commencement of their professional experience placements. The training must be successfully undertaken every two years and students will need to ensure that their certificate of completion is current.

The NSW Department of Education advises that students who do not successfully complete this training, as verified by the university, will not be able to undertake professional experience activities in NSW public schools.

Working with Children Check

All teacher education students in Australia must comply with the working with children legislation requirements of the state / country of where their placement is occurring. Students will be required to provide evidence to the Faculty of Arts and Education’s Professional Experience Unit of a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter prior to undertaking any placement in a school or early childhood service. The checks are intended to identify people who have convictions for such things as violence or sexual offences and who may put clients'/children’s personal safety or health at risk. Traffic violations and other minor offences are not of interest.

Prospective students should be aware that not passing a Working with Children Check will make it difficult for them to complete a teacher education course satisfactorily because of the unavailability of suitable school or preschool professional experience placements.

The Working with Children Check expires every five years. You will be required to ensure it remains current and valid to the end of the final placement in the course. Please note that a WWCC can take an extended period of time, so it is recommended that you commence the process early to prevent timing problems. The Australian Institute of Family Studies provides useful information and links relevant to the Australian states and territories. Information on the current Working with Children Check must be uploaded to the student’s information site on InPlace.

Child Protection Awareness Training

Students must also complete child protection awareness training. Where this is not possible face to face, an online training course is available. This training needs to be renewed annually. See: Child protection awareness training e-learning module

Residential schools are a great way to practise what you are learning in a hands-on environment, and to meet your lecturers and classmates.

Some online courses include a residential school, where you will attend a CSU campus during certain sessions throughout your course.

For each 8 point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, residential schools, or examinations.

If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

Graduation requirements

As a CSU student, throughout your course you have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to your discipline. This ongoing development will enable you to effectively participate in your course and graduate prepared to enter the workforce.

To graduate students need to accrue 264 credit points by successfully passing the 33 subjects set out in the recommended course structure.

Aside from course tuition fees, all students who choose to study on campus incur other fees such as accommodation, Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and other living expenses.

If you choose to study online, some subjects may require you to attend compulsory residential schools in Australia. Residential schools are held on campus in Australia for up to five days during certain sessions.

Online courses for international students do not meet the requirement for an Australian Student Visa, therefore you will need to check that you can obtain an appropriate visa for any residential school session.
