Course highlights

CSU's Bachelor of Education (K–12) prepares you to be a teacher who is effective and reflective in your practice, will manage the changing nature of teaching in the community, and have well-developed interpersonal skills.

Study areas to suit your passions

Your studies will include professional experience subjects, studies in all Key Learning Areas for teaching kindergarten to Year 6, and studies for a major in a high school teaching area. You will choose a major high school teaching area from business studies, English, mathematics, modern history or science. Students at Port Macquarie are able to major in business studies, English, mathematics or modern history. From your third year, you can choose to study completely online or remain on campus.

More hands-on experience

You will spend 120 days in the classroom — more than students of other teacher education degrees — in a variety of rural, regional and/or metropolitan primary and secondary schools. You will also complete 35 hours in community educational settings.

CSU's education facilities include computer laboratories; specialist rooms for creative arts, science, and human movement studies; and connected learning spaces and mobile technology-enabled systems, providing flexibility in how you engage with peers, the content and lecturers.

Future-proof your career

Professional experience and literacy and numeracy development and support are embedded into this course to ensure that you meet new government standards for teachers. Following your second year of study, you may concurrently enrol in our Bachelor of Educational Studies, to add studies in a second high school teaching area.

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) until 31 December 2019 for national accreditation recongnised by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Graduates from this program will possess a teaching award that is recognised nationally and internationally.

During the first year of the course, students will participate in a community cultural education program through exposure to learning and teaching in non school settings such as PCYC, Juvenile Detention Centres, Sport and Recreation Centres, or other approved settings / organisations. This placement will assist students in recognising that educational experiences are linked to wider social issues and contexts.

In subsequent years, students undertake a number of placements in a diverse range of school settings, from primary through secondary. Placements include both observation and teaching, and depending on the subject are up to 30 days in length.

This school-based workplace experience will contribute to the students' professional development as a teacher, with a focus on progression toward meeting the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at Graduate level. There is also the opportunity for students to gain valuable experience through an international placement.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students

From 1 July 2016, all students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) before being able to register with their state-based teacher institute or equivalent body. From January 2017, all students will need to pass the test before undertaking their final professional experience placement. This computer-based test consists of both multiple choice and short answer questions and is designed to assess personal literacy and numeracy capabilities. The purpose of the test is to demonstrate to future employers that early career teachers have high levels of literacy and numeracy. CSU has a range of support options specifically for initial teacher education students preparing for the Test. More information about the test is available at teacheredtest.acer.edu.au


Anaphylaxis Training for all Initial Teacher Education Students

The NSW Education Standards Authority (ESA), previously the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES), now requires that all initial teacher education students have training in anaphylaxis. In order to meet this requirement, ALL students must complete the training module found at http://etraining.allergy.org.au. The online module takes approximately one hour to complete.

On successful completion of the online module, participants will receive a certificate of completion. A copy of this certificate must be attached to your application for your professional experience placement. ESA suggests that students also present a copy of their certificate of completion to principals at the commencement of their professional experience placements. The training must be successfully undertaken every two years and students will need to ensure that their certificate of completion is current.

The NSW Department of Education advises that students who do not successfully complete this training, as verified by the university, will not be able to undertake professional experience activities in NSW public schools.


Working with Children Check

All teacher education students in Australia must comply with the working with children legislation requirements of the state / country of where their placement is occurring. Students will be required to provide evidence to the Faculty of Arts and Education’s Professional Experience Unit of a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter prior to undertaking any placement in a school or early childhood service. The checks are intended to identify people who have convictions for such things as violence or sexual offences and who may put clients'/children’s personal safety or health at risk. Traffic violations and other minor offences are not of interest.

Prospective students should be aware that not passing a Working with Children Check will make it difficult for them to complete a teacher education course satisfactorily because of the unavailability of suitable school or preschool professional experience placements.

The Working with Children Check expires every five years. You will be required to ensure it remains current and valid to the end of the final placement in the course. Please note that a WWCC can take an extended period of time, so it is recommended that you commence the process early to prevent timing problems. The Australian Institute of Family Studies provides useful information and links relevant to the Australian states and territories. Information on the current Working with Children Check must be uploaded to the student’s information site on InPlace.

Child Protection Awareness Training

Students must also complete child protection awareness training. Where this is not possible face to face, an online training course is available. This training needs to be renewed annually. See: Child protection awareness training e-learning module

Residential schools are a great way to practise what you are learning in a hands-on environment, and to meet your lecturers and classmates.

Some online courses include a residential school, where you will attend a CSU campus during certain sessions throughout your course.

Subjects

For each 8 point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, residential schools, or examinations.

If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

Graduation requirements

As a CSU student, throughout your course you have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to your discipline. This ongoing development will enable you to effectively participate in your course and graduate prepared to enter the workforce.

Students must complete 304 subject points of study.

Prospective Higher Degree by Research candidates may apply for a scholarship to cover their tuition fees, living costs and research costs. The main round of Australian Government funded Research Training Program scholarships is open for applications in September and October each year.

We have a wide range of scholarships available to help you with the costs of studying at CSU. There are scholarships based on academic performance or your personal circumstances. Other scholarships and grants cover specific costs like accommodation and textbooks, and some offer funds that you can use in any way to enhance your university experience. Indigenous students can access the Indigenous Academic Success Program (IASP). This free program is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled at CSU. It gives you one-on-one access to tutors to help you with your assessments and prepare you for exams.

At CSU, we understand that you are making a financial investment in your future and we want to make sure that you receive the best value for money for your education. That’s why our students enjoy more affordable course tuition fees than other Australian universities, while still receiving a high standard of education.

Tuition fees are set for the duration of your course and don’t go up each year.

CSU Alumni receive a discount on fee-paying postgraduate courses – so if you study your bachelor’s degree with us, and decide to continue your studies at CSU, you could save 10 per cent off your postgraduate tuition.

Aside from course tuition fees, all students who choose to study on campus incur other fees such as accommodation, Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and other living expenses.

If you choose to study online, some subjects may require you to attend compulsory residential schools in Australia. Residential schools are held on campus in Australia for up to five days during certain sessions.

Online courses for international students do not meet the requirement for an Australian Student Visa, therefore you will need to check that you can obtain an appropriate visa for any residential school session.
