CSU's Graduate Diploma of Mathematics provides mathematical training for people who do not have a university background in mathematics. Graduates in other disciplines who need to know and use mathematics in order to progress in their careers will also find the course meets their needs.

  • Why study this course?

    The Graduate Diploma of Mathematics provides a flexible and tailored program of study to meet the varied needs of graduates. It aims to increase studentsÂ’ quantitative skills by taking students from a high school calculus level of mathematics to the higher level required in various professions; for example teaching, engineering, finance, insurance, epidemiology and meteorology. In particular, this course allows teachers to add mathematics as a second teaching area or to move from primary to secondary mathematics teaching.

    CSU's Graduate Diploma of Mathematics includes topics in algebra and calculus that every advanced user of mathematics needs to know. It will supplement the knowledge and skills base of the graduate who has found that their previous mathematical training is now limiting. It can provide a flexible, tailored program of study to meet the varied needs of graduates in fields such as secondary education, research and extension work.

    Flexible study options

    Subjects are taught using a range of blended learning techniques. These include distance education study materials, video-captured lectures, online meetings, subject forums and additional online subject resources. The flexible learning environment allows students to study this online course from anywhere in the world. In the mathematics subjects, students are introduced to a mathematical computer software program, Maple, and are encouraged to apply this when solving more advanced problems.

    As with all CSU's courses, the Graduate Diploma of Mathematics and Graduate Certificate in Mathematics are designed and delivered with study flexibility in mind. Our students choose between full-time and part-time study options to fit in with work and lifestyle commitments. You could choose to study just one subject in an academic session or, with approval, fast-track degree completion by undertaking two or more subjects per session.

  • Workplace learning

    The teaching focused students will need to complete a Mathematics Curriculum Methods subject, where they will prepare assessments that are directly relevant to mathematics teaching. These students must also complete a Professional Experience subject, where they must demonstrate their competence by completing a 25-day mathematics teaching professional experience across Year 7-12 in a secondary school.

    EMM442 Curriculum Methods 2: Mathematics could replace one of the two unspecified elective credits for those eligible students (see Credit).

    Enrolment pattern

    Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

    Due to the flexible nature of the course there is no prescribed enrolment pattern. However students need to have successfully completed both MTH101 and MTH102 to be able to study most of the higher level mathematics subjects. When planning their enrolment students need to be aware of prerequisite requirements and the availability of subjects.

    It may be possible to complete the course in one year but for most students the course would take at least 18 months.

    Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

    Due to the flexible nature of the course there is no prescribed enrolment pattern. However students need to have successfully completed both MTH101 and MTH102 to be able to study most of the higher level mathematics subjects. When planning their enrolment students need to be aware of prerequisite requirements and the availability of subjects.

    For most students the course will take at least 2 years.

    For those students studying the course to add mathematics as a second teaching area or to retrain from primary to secondary mathematics, EMM441 and EPT442 are compulsory restricted electives.

    Teaching Focused Students who choose to study two subjects a session and start in session 1, are advised to select EMM441 as the restricted elective first session and MTH419 in their second session.

  • Admission information

    For entry to the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics applicants are required to have completed an undergraduate degree or a teaching qualification. Applicants must also have studied, within the last 10 years, a high school mathematics subject that includes calculus (for example HSC Mathematics or VCE Mathematical Methods. HSC General Mathematics or equivalent is not sufficient), OR have completed a university level mathematics subject which includes calculus (such as MTH105) which is deemed by the Course Coordinator to be equivalent.

    Students who attempt the subject EPT442 will need to undergo a police check.

    STEP scholarship

    Have you considered taking that extra STEP? The Sponsored Training Education Program (STEP) scholarship is an initiative of teach.NSW and is available to help your career advancement. STEP provides you with assistance to undertake further studies to gain additional approval in areas such as mathematics, and offers permanent employment in geographical areas of staffing need. 

    Some of the benefits include:

    • an annual tuition subsidy of up to $5,000 based on a full-time study load (pro-rata for part-time study)
    • an annual general purpose allowance of $300
    • a $3,000 relocation allowance for teachers who relocate to an area of staffing need following course completion (where ineligible for Transferred Officers Compensation)
    • a study completion grant of $2,500 upon eligibility for the award of the additional qualification or studies
    • up to eight days relief, to be paid to the school, per annum
    • study leave in accordance with current provisions contained in the Teachers Handbook.

    In addition to the financial support, successful applicants who complete the required studies under the program will:

    • permanent appointment to a NSW public school in a high-demand location
    • acquire new knowledge and further their teaching skills
    • broaden their career advancement opportunities and eligibility for executive and leadership roles

  • About the School
    School of Computing and Mathematics

    The School of Computing and Mathematics is a cross-campus School, based at the Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga campuses, and offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees online. The School has strong external research and consultancy links, creating a range of opportunities for students to mix their study with interesting research projects. The School of Computing and Mathematics has an excellent national reputation, with a research profile that is ranked at world level according to the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation. In addition, the School was recently ranked by University Reviews as offering one of the top two computer science courses in Australia for 2016. The focus of teaching and research is on practical applications of information and communication technology, mathematics and statistics to applied problems in industry, the environment and business.

  • Academic expectations

    For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

    Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

    Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

    Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

    Throughout their studies, CSU students have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English Language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to their discipline. This ongoing development will enable students to effectively participate in their course and graduate as competent professionals.
