English language requirements

You will generally meet English proficiency requirements if you have undertaken and completed sufficient study in English.

The following outlines what you need to achieve to meet the University's requirements.  A Faculty may require a higher standard of proficiency than that specified in the Acceptable tests for English proficiency, for programs deemed to be linguistically demanding. Refer to the sections below regarding courses with additional requirements.

An applicant who does not otherwise meet the University's requirements may be admitted on the recommendation of the Executive Dean of the appropriate faculty.

Standard CSU English Language Proficiency Requirements

You will be deemed to have  sufficient English proficiency if you:

  • Were born in one of the  following countries and have completed at least one qualification in one of  those countries and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was  English

  • If you were not born in one  of the following countries but have completed senior secondary study or at  least one year of full-time university study in one of these countries and the  language in which the qualification was undertaken was English.

If you do not meet any of the points above, you will need to demonstrate English proficiency using one of the acceptable tests. Test results must be within two years from the date of your application for admission unless otherwise stated.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for Associate Degree in Policing Practice

All applicants for the ADPP, who do not meet the Standard CSU English Proficiency Requirements, must demonstrate proficiency by completing a qualification that meets the requirements outlined below:

  • Associate Degree in Policing Practice

  • An Academic IELTS of 7.0 with no score below a 7.0 in each of the individual skill areas or a qualification deemed equivalent. (see CSU ELP Concordance tables)

  • Completed Proficiency Test from the NSW Adult Migrant English Service (AMES) with a score of 4 or better in each of the four macro skills categories of the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) Academic Selection Criteria.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for PhD, Master by Research and Professional Doctoral Courses

  • All applicants for PhD, Master by Research and Professional Doctoral courses, who do not meet the English proficiency requirements, must demonstrate proficiency by completing a qualification deemed to be equivalent by CSU to an Academic IELTS of 6.5 with no score below a 6.0 in each of the individual skill areas. (see CSU ELP Concordance tables)

Applicants for PhD, Master by Research and Professional Doctoral courses will also be deemed to have meet the English language Proficiency requirements if they have completed one of the following:

  • Level 109 of the English Language Services (ELS) examination with a score of B or higher in the Reading and Writing components, and a score of P or higher in the Speaking and Listening components within the last 12 months

  • Written evidence of completion of a University degree that have been conducted and examined solely in English. Acceptable forms of evidence include transcripts indicating that the language of instruction was English or by provision of a certified written statement from the academic institution.

  • EAP4 program with D grade or higher

  • German DAAD language test with a minimum of 2 A scores and a B scores

  • Swedish High School English results with a rating of C or above (results must be no older than 8 years from proposed course start date)

  • Norwegian High School English results with a score of 4 above (results must be no older than 8 years from proposed course start date)

  • Finnish High School English results with a score of 8 or above (results must be no older than 8 years from proposed course start date)

  • Danish High School English results with a score of 7 in English A or 10 in English B ( from test results after August 1st 2007) (results must be no older than 8 years from proposed course start date)

The Presiding Officer of the Board of Graduate Studies may in special circumstances, on behalf of the Board, waive the above proficiency requirements after consulting the relevant Executive Dean, Sub-Dean and nominated Supervisor.
