Course entry requirements

If you're applying for any of the courses below, you'll need to demonstrate a higher English language proficiency. To see these specific requirements, click on the course link to visit the online course brochure. For information on how we use English language tests other than IELTS, please view the Charles Sturt concordance tables section.

We'll consider that you have sufficient English Language Proficiency, in courses not requiring a higher standard of English Language Proficiency, if you fall into one of the following two groups.

Group one

You were born in one of the following eligible countries, have completed at least one qualification in that country, and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was English  – OR – while you were not born in one of the following eligible countries, you completed senior secondary study or at least one year of full-time university study in one of these countries, and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was English.

Group two

You have completed a qualification from the following list and obtained the outlined minimum requirement:

*qualification needs to be delivered and completed in Australia

Our standard Minimum Entry Criteria applies to most courses, except those listed under courses with higher English language proficiency above.

• For Undergraduate courses, an academic IELTS, obtained within the last 2 years, with a minimum overall score of 6.0, and no individual score below 5.5; OR
• For Postgraduate courses, an academic IELTS, obtained within the last 2 years, with a minimum overall score of 6.0, and no individual score below 6.0; OR
• a qualification we deem to be equivalent, as outlined in the ELP concordance table below.

If you are an applicant for PhD, Master by Research or Professional Doctoral courses, you'll need to demonstrate meeting English Language proficiency requirements by completing a qualification Charles Sturt deems equivalent to

an Academic IELTS of 6.5, with no score below a 6.0, in each of the individual skill areas.

If you're an applicant for PhD, Master by Research or Professional Doctoral courses, we'll deem you've met the English language proficiency requirements if you've completed one of the following:

1. Level 109 of the English Language Services (ELS) examination, with a score of B or higher in the Reading and Writing components, and a score of P or higher in the Speaking and Listening components within the last 12 months.
2. Written evidence of completion of a university degree that was conducted and examined solely in English in a Group one country list. For the list of Group one countries, please see the "If you have previous studies in English" section earlier on this page.
3. Applicants may request (in writing) that alternative English language proficiency evidence be accepted. These requests will be reviewed and decided by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) for HDR applicants.

Please note some courses may not recognise all tests, please refer to individual course entry requirements for any exclusions. Some courses accept OET (OET: minimum score of B in all four components), please refer to individual course entry requirements for details:
Bachelor of Nursing

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

*Charles Sturt University does not accept IELTS Online or PTE Academic Online test

**DET is applicable to meet ELP requirements where the student does not have to meet Department of Home Affairs approved English test for international student visa (subclass 500) purposes.
