At Charles Sturt, we've completely reimagined the way communication is taught. you'll learn from academics, industry experts and alumni in physical and virtual environments. Listen to your lectures via podcasts, attend masterclasses and take part in hands-on workshops in our studios and labs.
Your communication degree will prepare you to be industry ready when you graduate. In your first year, you'll respond to briefs from industry developing your core communication skills. In your second year, you'll work in a collaborative environment with your peers, coming up with new ideas to connect with audiences. Then in your third year, you'll launch your career – and build more industry connections. During your studies you'll also have the opportunity to grab the mic and get some hands-on experience at our community radio station 2MCE. This important work-integrated learning resource will help you gain professional and practical skills in the media and broadcasting industries.
We’ve designed your study experience to be as flexible as possible. You can fast-track your degree and finish in less than three years by choosing the accelerated option, or choose to study part-time and complete in six years. With a condensed two-day timetable, you can balance study, work, and personal life with ease. Plus, if you need to pause your studies for whatever reason, you can exit and get a qualification at each completed year of study; a Diploma after the first year, Associate Degree after 2 years or the full Bachelor after three years.
You will produce a wide range of original content for our on campus community radio station 2MCE and our newsroom for the community broadcasting sector, National Radio News (NRN). You can try your hand at producing and presenting a radio show, writing news stories for hourly bulletins, producing interviews and current affairs packages, developing social media content with in-studio film and photo shoots, or supporting community engagement activities through outside broadcasts.
National Radio News reaches over 1.5 million listeners a week in every state and territory, and is the only national radio newsroom at an Australian university. NRN gives you professional newsroom experience and the opportunity for paid work whilst you study.
Your bachelor's degree in communication will open up opportunities in a wide range of media and communication careers, such as:
For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.
