Flexible study options

You can elect to exit this medical science course following completion of the first four subjects with the Graduate Certificate in Medical Science or Graduate Certificate in Medical Science (Pathology). You may also elect to exit following completion of the first eight subjects with the Graduate Diploma of Medical Science or Graduate Diploma of Medical Science (Pathology).

Choose your area of focus

Complete a dissertation in one of a wide variety of study areas, including haematology, immunology and immunohaematology; molecular biology and genetics and medical microbiology (including virology and parasitology); medical and clinical biochemistry; histopathology and cytology; laboratory quality management; and neuroscience and neurophysiology. Other topics in line with your interests can also be considered, depending on the availability of supervisory expertise.

Career opportunities

Apply your advanced skills to progress your areas of specialisation across pathology, clinical physiology and biomedical research. Within clinical physiology you'll provide expertise in hospitals and healthcare facilities to examine and monitor human physiological systems, such as respiratory, nervous and cardiac systems; and to diagnose physiological disorders and long-term illnesses. As a specialist in biomedical research you'll combine science and technology to undertake and improve investigations and analysis relating to the human body and develop models and solutions to improve medical and health outcomes.

    What you will study

    For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

    Intensive school

    You may need to attend an online or on-campus intensive school for certain subjects in this course. These schools usually involve lectures, tutorials and practicals that will give you a deeper understanding of your subject.

    The course consists a Pathology specialisation or subjects selected from restricted electives. Students can complete a dissertation based on BMS508 Research proposal OR additional electives.

    • Applicants who hold either a 3 or 4 year undergraduate bachelor degree in a relevant area.
    • Applicants intending to complete the pathology specialisation will be required to have a minimum of 2 years full-time employment as a medical laboratory scientist (or equivalent).
